This is the Central Arctic, the Kara Sea, one of the
most formidable places on our planet.
Quite recently these blocks of ice, these fields of snow and
multitude of islands, which stretch from the northern borders of the
Soviet Union to the North Pole itself, were proudly named the Arctic
possessions of the USSR.
These islands are not to be found on any ordinary geographical
map. These islands served as aerodromes for strategic bombers to
take off and to land. Nuclear weapons were tested here and missiles
were launched from local launch pads…
One can find the traces of the past military splendor on these
deserted clumps of land… Like sunken ships, on them lingers the
memory of those who served here.
In April 2001, an unusual expedition left Norilsk for the lost
islands of the Central Arctic. The participants were ham radio
operators, well-known in Russia and abroad. They went in order to
broadcast from this frozen edge of the world..
